Contents and Containers: Exploring Space

Posted on Thursday, November 1st, 2018

Iowa Child Care Resource & Referral of NE Iowa will be sponsoring a 1.5 hour Contents & Containers: Exploring Space workshop.

Infants and toddlers are continually trying to get a sense of the space around them and their place within it. They figure out how to navigate through space and how various objects fit together. These early experiences are necessary for children to begin to make sense of space (size, shapes, volume, distance, etc.). The core of their spatial reasoning and geometrical thinking begins with these early experiences.

Children must have many opportunities to physically manipulate objects in order to understand properties such as hard, soft, smooth, rough, flat, round, and so on. These experiences provide opportunities for inquiry, analysis, and logical thought. Infants and toddlers must have opportunities to explore objects and space in order to develop spatial reasoning, which is critical in the STEM disciplines.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about a rich math and science curriculum for infants and toddlers, hands-on experience with materials, practical information about the teacher’s role in facilitating the curriculum, and background knowledge about how children’s spatial reasoning develops. The core elements of STEM will be addressed throughout the workshop as they apply to infant and toddler curriculum.

To attend this workshop, please register at the DHS Training Registry.
